Community Folk Art Center Celebrates Asian Art, Culture and Influence with Two New Exhibitions

The Community Folk Art Center, 805 East Genesee Street in Syracuse, celebrates arts, cultures and influences of Asia in two new exhibitions from August 26th through October 21st, 2006: "Vietnam: Journey of the Heart, Photographs by Geoffrey Clifford, 1985-2000" and "Perspectives: Contemporary Asian Art, Culture and Identity."

"Vietnam: Journey of the Heart, Photographs by Geoffrey Clifford, 1985-2000" was organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). Each year, SITES shares the wealth of the Smithsonian's collections and research programs with millions of people around the country.

Geoffrey Clifford, who served as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, flew missions over the country for two years. During his tour of duty, he was restricted to his secured military perimeter and was unable to experience the country firsthand. He later became a professional photographer and returned to Vietnam with the first organized group of American veterans in 1985. Since then, Clifford has made seventeen visits to Vietnam to document the country, its people and culture with his camera. His stunning color photographs present a portrait of modern Vietnam, contrasting timeless pastoral landscapes with images of its contemporary modern culture.

"Perspectives: Contemporary Asian Art, Culture and Identity," celebrates artistic and cultural traditions and influences of Asia. Featured artists include Vinh Dang, Lisa Jong-Soon Goodlin, Joshua Harris, Bea Lee, Mai Lee, Mao Yang Lee, Hye Yeon Nam, Anh Nguyen, Aly Thao and Phong Vu. The works, in a variety of media and formats, explore the diversity of Asian arts and cultures as well as the concept of identity.

There will be an artist reception on Saturday, September 9th, 2006 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The reception will feature a poetry reading by Vinh Dang and a performance by the Dragon Dancers. Regular Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.
