THIS WEEK AT THE COMMUNITY FOLK ART CENTER The Healing Passage/Voices From The Water, an award winning new documentary by writer/actress and filmmaker S. Pearl Sharp, will screen at The Community Folk Art Center, 805 East Genesee Street, Thursday February 9th, 2006 at 7:00 pm. Filmmaker S. Pearl Sharp will be present to introduce and discuss the film. Admission is $3:00. On Friday February 10th CFAC will host You Ain’t Never Lied: Writing Fiction from History, A Writing Workshop with S. Pearl Sharp. The workshop is free and open to the public. Call (315) 442-2230 for more information. On Saturday, February 11th, there will be an artist reception from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., featuring a gallery talk by Napoleon Jones-Henderson. Napoleon Jones-Henderson exhibited extensively both in the United States and internationally. He is one of the founding members of the AfriCOBRA collective. AfriCOBRA ("African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists") began in Chicago in the late 1960's as a group of visual, performing, and literary artists who sought to capture the vibrancy and spirit of African American urban life through elements found in traditional African art. Henderson is also a noted teacher, consultant and lecturer. He is currently the Executive Director of the Research Institute of African and African Diaspora Arts, Inc. in Roxbury, MA. He has studied at The Sorbonne in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, Northern Illinois University and Maryland Institute College of Art. The exhibition "Requiem for Our Ancestors and Other Warriors: Works by Napoleon Jones-Henderson" will be on view from February 4th through March 18th, 2006 at the Community Folk Art Center. at the Center's new location at 805 East Genesee Street in Syracuse. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. |
